2012 Breeders Cup Schedule at Santa Anita

2012 Breeders Cup racing returns to Santa Anita from a two year layoff. And a switch back to the dirt after a less than successful attempt with a synthetic surface.

The mixture of sand and wax covered carpet fibers known as Polytrack, Cushion Track, Tapeta and others commonly used elsewhere in North America and European racing is intended to provide an even racing surface unaffected by the natural elements of rain and snow. And considered safer for the horse and jockeys but those expectations were never realized at Santa Anita.

The one twist in this year’s schedule has the BC Marathon being run on Friday and the Filly & Mare Sprint being run on Saturday. In the past all races carded for female runners were contested on opening day and the Marathon has typically been the first race of the series on day two of the Breeders Cup which usually has all the male runners facing off.
